Ames, Gilbert School Board Elections, DMACC Levy Vote Tuesday

Voters will be asked who should fill school board seats and whether to continue public measures that support Des Moines Area Community College Tuesday. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Residents of the Ames Community School District will be voting Tuesday to elect three people to the School Board and to decide on two ballot questions regarding DMACC.

Incumbents Mike Espeset, William 'Bill' Talbot and Challenger Tim Rasmussen are on the ballot for the three, four-year seats. Incumbent David Putz is not running.

DMACC PUBLIC MEASURE A

SHALL THE FOLLOWING PUBLIC MEASURE BE ADOPTED? DMACC Equipment Levy: “Shall the Board of Directors of the Des Moines Area Community College (Merged Area XI) in the Counties of Adair, Audubon, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Clarke, Crawford, Dallas, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Polk, Poweshiek, Shelby, Story, and Warren, State of Iowa, cause to continue to be levied an additional tax not exceeding six cents per thousand dollars of assessed value in any one year for an additional period of ten years beginning with the tax levy to be made for collection in the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2015, for the purposes of program sharing between community colleges or for the purchase of instructional equipment of the Des Moines Area Community College.”

DMACC PUBLIC MEASURE B

SHALL THE FOLLOWING PUBLIC MEASURE BE ADOPTED? DMACC Facilities Levy: “Shall the Board of Directors of the Des Moines Area Community College (Merged Area XI) in the Counties of Adair, Audubon, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Clarke, Crawford, Dallas, Greene, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Polk, Poweshiek, Shelby, Story, and Warren, State of Iowa, cause to continue to be levied a tax not exceeding twenty and one-fourth

(20 1/4) cents per thousand dollars of assessed value in any one year for an additional period of ten (10) consecutive years beginning with the tax levy to be made for collection in the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2015, to be used for any one or more of the following purposes: for the purchase of grounds, construction of buildings, payment of debts contracted for the construction of buildings, purchase of buildings and equipment for buildings, and the acquisition of libraries; for the purpose of paying costs of utilities; and for the purpose of maintaining, remodeling, improving, or expanding the Des Moines Area Community College (Merged Area XI); or for such other purposes as authorized by law, all as provided in Chapter 260C, Section 22 of the Code of Iowa.”

Voters in the Gilbert Community School District will elect two at-large board members.

Sean Barber, of Panoramic Court, and John Nelson, of George W. Carver Ave., are on the ballot.

People can look up their polling place by clicking here and entering their address. Enter the town first to narrow results. A complete list of polling locations follows this story.

People who have not registered to vote can still vote on Election Day, Sept. 10 by showing up in their polling places with an ID and proof of residency. People need a picture ID, such as a valid driver's license, and proof of address. If their address is on the ID that's fine otherwise people should bring a utility bill, lease, or a bank statement with their current address.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Ames Community School District

Polling locations: Seven vote centers will be available. Any registered voter within the Ames School District who is eligible to vote at the regular school election may vote at any one of the vote centers in the school district listed below.

  • Vote Center 2 University Baptist Church, 2400 Mortensen Parkway
