New Construction Brings Petco and Sports Authority to Ames

The concrete structure going up on South Duff Avenue will bring at least two new major retailers to Ames.

A concrete wall going up between Target and Walmart on South Duff Avenue is the shell of a new retail development that will house a Petco and a Sports Authority.

Work began on the 3.9 acre-site March 6, according to building permits.

The owners of the land requested a tax abatement from the Ames City Council in February, but were denied.

Ruhl and Ruhl Commercial which owns the land said it would lose money without the abatement according to an article in the Ames Tribune. But council members did not agree.

Petco and Sports Authority are estimated to create 125 jobs in Ames.
