Ames Transformer Fire Quickly Extinguished

A transformer caught fire early this morning as storms rolled through.

A transformer caught fire about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, but flames were quickly extinguished thanks to a fire protection system, according to a release from the city.

Ames firefighters responded to the fire at a transformer located east of the Ames Power Plant, 200 E. Fifth St., the release stated.

A fire protection system surrounding the transformer contained the fire, and fire crews didn't have to do anything else, said Brian Trower, Ames Electric Services Assistant Director in a release from the city.
