Some Ames Homes Without Power Thursday After Storm

Falling tree limbs and lighting took out power around Ames Wednesday evening and Ames Electric Services was working to restore power Thursday morning.

About 200 people remained without power Thursday morning, after a fast moving thunderstorm with high winds swept through Ames about 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, according to the City of Ames.

The electric outage affected almost 2,000 customers. Outages were caused by both falling tree limbs and lightning strikes, Susan Gwiasda, City of Ames public relations officer stated in a release from the city. Damage was also done to a transmission pole on a tie-in line from Des Moines.

Utility crews worked through the night to restore power.

The storm brought the area about a half inch of rain according to one weather observer. Lightning knocked out power to the weather station that collects data for the National Weather Service, said Robert DeRoy, a National Weather Service data manager.

No more rain is expected in Ames Thursday but Saturday night into Sunday there is a 30 to 40 percent chance. Temperatures will be cooler than what Ames has been having. Today's high is expected to reach 92 degrees and the high on Friday is expected to reach 82, DeRoy said.
