Ames High School Girls' Squads Claim Three Titles in November

Competitors from Ames High School won three state titles this month. Ames students were named swim, dive and cheer squad champs.

The 2011 girls' swim and dive teams set new school and state records when they won the state championship for the second time Nov. 5, according to a news release. And the Ames High fall cheer squad won a cheerleading title that same day.

Swim and Dive

Girls' swim and dive team highlights include Maddie Bro, Sydney Sorenson, Lauren Rosser and Taylor Flummerfelt earning state champion honors in the 200- medley relay. They set a new school and state record time of 1:46.16, and earned automatic All-American Honors, said coach Dan Flannery.

Taylor Flummerfelt set a new school record in the 50 freestyle, while Maddie Bro placed second in the event, just one-tenth of a second behind her. Both earned First Team All-State honors.

Lauren Rosser finished eighth in the 100 butterfly, setting a new school record with her time.

Taylor Flummerfelt, Rachel Shriver, Hannah Newell and Maddie Bro were also named the state champions in the 400-freestyle relay, setting a new school record and shaving a full second off of the state record to win the event in 3:31.65. Read more here.

Cheer Squad

There is no overall state title for cheer squad, but the Ames High fall state squad topped 16 other 4A division teams to win a state cheerleading title Nov. 5.

In addition to the squad’s 4A title, Ames Team 1 seniors Sara Anderson, Karlie Kinneer, Megan Sill, Mariay Tsushima and Kelsie Vertanen, won first place in the Small Group Stunt for the first time in Ames High School’s history.

Senior squad members are Karlie Kinneer, Megan Sill and Sara Anderson. Juniors are Mariay Tsushima, Gabby Hanson, Julia Barrett, Kaylee Hahn and Ashley Meyn. Sophomores are Kelsie Vertanen, Claire Espeset, Katie Joiner and Jessica Misra. Freshmen are Ellie Lemer, Elisa Sargeant, Savannah Farner, Madi Mills, Alecia Orr and Alex Munn.
