Iowa State University Names 2013 Athletes of the Year

This is the second year in a row the female athlete of the year has received the award.

Iowa State University has named both its male and female Athletes of the Year.

According to KIMT Channel 3 in Mason City, Iowa State track star Betsy Saina has been named the school’s female athlete of the year for the second year in a row.

Saina won her third NCAA title last weekend, the article said.

Saina won eight Big 12 titles and earned All-America honors 11 times in her career, KIMT reports. She is the fifth Cyclone woman to win athlete of the year twice.

Also, ISU golfer Scott Fernandez was named male athlete of the year on Monday, the Des Moines Register reports

A native of Granada, Spain, Fernandez’ season was unprecedented in program history, according to Iowa State Sports Information. Fernandez competed in 10 tournaments, finishing in the top-10 in eight of them, including an individual victory at the Furman Intercollegiate. He also had seven top-five finishes.

It marks the second season in a row where a men’s golfer was honored as ISU’s top male athlete, the Register reported. Nate McCoy won the award last season.
