Ames Man Among Iowans Recognized for Saving Lives

Nicholas Schroeder pulled a man from his burning car in March.

An Ames man was among a number of Iowans recognized for saving lives during the Governor's Annual Life Saving Award Ceremony at the Iowa State Fair Friday.

Gov. Terry Branstad recognized Nicholas Schroeder for his efforts in saving a man from a car that had burst into flames. Schroeder was riding along with an Urbandale Police Officer on March 3 when they were called to a vehicle crash.

Schroeder and the Urbandale Police Officer Zac McDowell approached the burning car from the passenger side and the officer pulled the driver Ian Waseskuk from the the car and Schroeder pulled him further from the burning car.

Waseskuk was driving the vehicle in circles, “performing 'donuts'” in the parking lot when he lost control and hit the building's air conditioning unit.

“Nicholas Schroeder is being recognized for his bravery while assisting Officer McDowell save Mr. Waseskuk from severe injuries or even death. Nicholas Schroeder is being awarded the meritorious service award,” the declaration read.
