Police: Man Charged in Break-In Attempt

An Ames resident who thought he saw a person shining a flashlight in a window and feared that someone might be trying to break in early Saturday, June 8 turned out to be correct.

When police arrived about 4 a.m., they searched around the home and found Daniel Smith, 33, lying in the bottom of an egress window on the west side of the home, according to complaints.

Police also found a small bag of pills at the home's south door, a matching shoe print on an air conditioner and a pane of broken glass, complaints said. It appeared that someone had broken a window trying to raise it from the outside, complaints said.Β 

Smith, 33, was charged with second-degree attempted burglary, a Class D felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison and public intoxication. Smith's blood alcohol level registered at .062 percent, according to complaints.
