President Barack Obama ended his campaign last night in Des Moines, just steps from his former 2008 campaign headquarters, making a final push for Iowa voters with over 20,000 looking on.
President Obama brought the final campaign rally of his political career back to the place where it all began, asking voters Monday night to help him win a second term. More than 20,000 Iowans packed the streets in the East Village of Des Moines, and both the President and first lady were serenaded with chants of "Four more years!" as they spoke to supporters last night. The president brought Bruce Springsteen along with him. Springsteen, who has appeared alongside Obama through much of the campaign, came out to a rousing ovation. Urging Iowans to get out to vote, Springsteen told attendees that he was convinced Obama was the right choice for the country. Obama will spend the day in Chicago waiting for the election results to come in, …

Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan made a final stop in Iowa Monday with a rally at Elliott Aviation in Des Moines.
Iowa voters who see the GOP ticket as the best chance to improve the nation's economy gathered Monday afternoon at Elliott Aviation in Des Moines to hear Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan speak during his final stop in Iowa on the "Victory Rally" tour. The event, held at an airplane hangar at the Des Moines Airport, was decked out in banners promising, "Real Change on Day One," reiterating the Romney/Ryan promise that, should they be elected, the turnaround in the country's economy would be swift. "This is it, this is huge," Ryan told the crowd after arriving an hour later than the announced time. Flanked by his wife, Janna, and their three children, Charlie, Liza and Sam, Ryan riled up the crowd by highlighting a quote …

Spoiler Alert -- Jones runs well in the first round and tries to console an emotional fellow hurdler.
Lolo Jones will live to hurdle another day. Jones, 30, won her heat in the 100-meter hurdles at roughly 4:00 a.m. Iowa time this morning. Jones finished with 12.68 seconds, just a little behind the fastest time of 12.57 pace set by world-champion Sally Pearson in another heat. The time qualifies the Des Moines native to run in the semifinals on Tuesday. Times for the semifinals and finals can be found here. After winning her heat, Jones tried to console Jamaica's Brigitte Foster-Hylton, who after running the second fastest time in the world this season, failed to qualify after tripping on a hurdle. Some argue that the fame for Jones has exceeded her performance on the Olympic stage. Will she be able to prove them wrong?
You'd think it would be hard enough just trying to medal in the London 2012 Olympics. For Iowan Lolo Jones, 30, whose fame outranks many other athletes with more Olympic success, the stakes are even higher. There is a growing sentiment that the Des Moines native and former Louisana State University track star does not deserve the attention -- and endorsement deals -- she has received up to this point. As if to make this point, Jones' recent revelation that she is a virgin gained more attention than nearly anything else she had done involving hurdles or a track. For example of this criticism, see this post on the New York Times that declares that Jones is valued more for her sex appeal than her athletic exploits. Women have struggled for …

Jan Bauer plans to make the trek to Des Moines to see Obama at the State Fairgrounds tonight.
When Jan Bauer, Story County Democrat chair, meets someone trying to decide between President Barack Obama or his challenger, Mitt Romney, she pulls out a card detailing Obama's achievements. Stepping in and preventing the second Great Depression is first on Bauer's list. “I don't think anyone knows how close we were to financial collapse,” Bauer said on the eve of the President's Des Moines campaign stop. Bauer credits Obama with rescuing the auto and housing industries, reforming the credit card industry, making college more affordable and her list goes on. She said Obama delivered universal health care, passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay act, restored the nation's reputation in the world, withdrew troops from Iraq and dealt with …

In his first visit to the battleground state since the January caucuses, the presumptive GOP nominee tells Iowans a "prairiefire of debt is sweeping across … the nation."
As a military wife and stay-at-home mom, federal spending plays a huge role in the day-to-day life of 30-year-old Rebecca Hayes. In fact, her family’s livelihood depends on it. “My husband is in the military and that’s how we receive our paychecks,” Hayes said. “And it always seems like that’s the first area they cut.” Hayes, a native of Boston, Mass., who now lives in Ames, Iowa, was among dozens of local residents who turned out to see former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at the Hotel Fort Des Moines in Des Moines Tuesday. This marked Romney’s first Iowa appearance since the Jan. 3 caucuses. The stop is part of a weeklong stint coordinated by Romney’s campaign and the Republican National Committee to stress “Obama’s debt, deficit and …

By Lynn Campbell IowaPolitics.com DES MOINES — Opponents of same-sex marriage stormed the Capitol on Tuesday, with a target on retiring Democratic senators who could tip the balance in a closely divided Senate and allow Iowans to vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. “Let us vote! Let us vote!” chanted the crowd of about 250 people, a sea of red T-shirts in the Capitol rotunda. Outside, a handful of same-sex marriage supporters — a married lesbian couple, an openly gay state senator, a union leader and a Christian pastor — put a human face on the issue. They countered what they considered an attack on themselves, their friends and their neighbors. Tammy Steinwandt, of Solon, gushed about how much it meant to marry …
