The 2012 Summer Solstice Brings First Day of Summer to Ames
It's the first official day of summer and the longest day of the year.
With highs in the upper 90s and heat indexes above 100 you might have thought summer came a little early, but today is the first day of summer, also known as the summer solstice. It's the longest day of the year (and the shortest night). The actual moment of the solstice will occur at about 6:08 p.m. this evening, while the sun sits directly above the Pacific Ocean to the west of Hawaii. By then Ames temperatures will have cooled to about 60 degrees. Thundershowers are expected after 4 p.m. according to the latest National Weather Service forecast.
