Fireworks display is part of grand opening for five new stores at North Grand Mall.
If you hear some explosions near North Grand Mall tonight, don't worry, it's just fireworks celebrating the opening of three new stores in the redeveloped area. Kohls, TJ Maxx and Shoe Carnival plan to celebrate their March openings with fireworks. The display is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 7. Fireworks will kick off grand opening festivities at all three stores and celebrate the opening of Justice and Rue 21 in the mall. Kohl's, TJ Maxx and Shoe Carnival all opened for business on Sunday March 3 and Shoe Carnival plans an additional grand opening of its own on March 16. The discount fashion store plans to open March 3, a few days before a March 7 fireworks display celebrating the opening of multiple stores.
TJ Maxx, a discount fashion store, will open earlier than originally announced. The store plans to celebrate its grand opening March 3, according to company officials. The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on its first day. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. The 24,000 square foot building is found in a strip between the Kohl's Department Store and the North Grand Mall. Kohl's also plans to open March 3. Shoe Carnival has planned a March 16th opening, according to a release from SCGlobal. Together the stores will employ more than 200 people. The Ames Shoe Carnival is one of three new stores planned for the Des Moines area in March.
Shoe Carnival, an Evansville, Ind. based shoe store, plans a grand opening near North Grand Mall in March. Jessica Hass, Shoe Carnival promotions and public relations coordinator at the headquarters, said she wasn't sure of the store's exact location, but signs around the North Grand Mall, show it next to the planned TJ Maxx, in an area under construction being called Shoppes of North Grand. The opening is one of three new stores planned for that shopping area. TJ Maxx and Kohl's have both announced that they will open this spring. Santa will be working hard right up until Christmas.
Santa will be making appearances in North Grand Mall in Ames until Christmas Eve. The jolly red-suited man will be available for photos from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. He will also be available from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 7 p.m. Dec. 23. Pets can have their photo taken with Santa from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight. Santa will also be at the mall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. His sleigh is set up right outside Younkers in North Grand Mall.

Several stores will open in the evening on Thanksgiving Thursday and at 12 a.m. Friday.
Black Friday, the shopping holiday that brings corporate stores into the black starts even earlier this year, just hours after you have feasted on your turkey or tofurkey dinners. Target, Sears and Walmart start their sales at about 8 p.m. Target opens at 9 p.m. Despite the extended hours, less shoppers said they will participate according to the latest survey from the National Retail Federation. It expects as many as 147 million people will go shopping this holiday weekend, a decrease from the 152 million who planned to shop during Black Friday in 2011. Kohl's Department Store takes shape outside North Grand Mall
Though store officials still won't say so, a Kohl's store appears to be under construction outside North Grand Mall. The website says a department store will celebrate a grand opening in the spring of 2013 and a sign outside the construction zone states Kohl's will open March 3 and a grand opening is planned for March 6. Sydney Hofer, Kohl's Department Stores Sr. Public Relations Coordinator, said she still couldn't share any information at this point. The mall's developer GK Development has been working on improving the mall site and demolished the former Sears auto center, former Wells Fargo, former Walgreens and former Furman buildings and are in the process of renovating the former Sears store. Kohl's isn't saying, but guess who is?
Ames city officials have confirmed the Kohl's rumor is in fact true. The retail chain plans on opening another department store here in 2013. It would make a home in a building separate from the North Grand Mall building but on the same site, according to a report in the Iowa State Daily. Ames Tribune reported that it had a copy of the lease. It's on file at the Story County Recorder's Office in Nevada. The 20-year agreement has an option of a five-year extension. It's signed with Grand Center Partners the owner of the plot of land the store would be built on. However Kohl's isn't confirming anything. Representatives from the discount fashion store now say they will open in the spring of 2013.
T.J. Maxx, a discount clothing and fashion store, whose representatives announced plans to open in Ames in the fall of 2012, won't open until the spring of 2013, company representatives have said. Brittany Welch, TJX Companies, public relations supervisor, said all they can say is when the store is opening in an email message. T.J. Maxx stores offer designer and brand name fashions for up to 60 percent off department store prices, according to the store's website. The store has never said where in Ames it would locate but the North Grand Mall's developer, GK Development, told Ames City Council that a group of tenants might be interested in opening at the mall site if improvements were made.
