The concrete structure going up on South Duff Avenue will bring at least two new major retailers to Ames.
A concrete wall going up between Target and Walmart on South Duff Avenue is the shell of a new retail development that will house a Petco and a Sports Authority. Work began on the 3.9 acre-site March 6, according to building permits. The owners of the land requested a tax abatement from the Ames City Council in February, but were denied. Ruhl and Ruhl Commercial which owns the land said it would lose money without the abatement according to an article in the Ames Tribune. But council members did not agree. Petco and Sports Authority are estimated to create 125 jobs in Ames. Ames Newsletter/Ames Patch Facebook page/Twitter: @AmesPatch

A software company that purchased nine Campustown buildings wants to knock them down and build a three story structure in its place.
Kingland Systems, which purchased nine Campustown buildings near the end of 2012, plans to knock them all down to make way for a three-story retail and office development. The Clear Lake software company plans to replace about half the buildings in the Campustown block bordered by Lincoln Way, Welch and Stanton Avenues and Chamberlain Street with taller buildings and wants the city to waive a setback requirement required for buildings above 30 feet. The affected buildings include the businesses along the 2400 block of Lincoln Way and the north half blocks of Welch and Stanton Avenues. (See photo attached.) That would allow the company to erect tall buildings without having to shrink the building's footprint from the street, according to a …

Kohl's isn't saying, but guess who is?
Editor's Note: As the year winds down, Ames Patch is looking back at some of the stories that made you talk, cry, laugh or just scratch your head. This story originally ran: June 26, 2012 Ames city officials have confirmed the Kohl's rumor is in fact true. The retail chain plans on opening another department store here in 2013. It would make a home in a building separate from the North Grand Mall building but on the same site, according to a report in the Iowa State Daily. Ames Tribune reported that it had a copy of the lease. It's on file at the Story County Recorder's Office in Nevada. The 20-year agreement has an option of a five-year extension. It's signed with Grand Center Partners the owner of the plot of land the store would be …

Kohl's Department Store takes shape outside North Grand Mall
Though store officials still won't say so, a Kohl's store appears to be under construction outside North Grand Mall. The website says a department store will celebrate a grand opening in the spring of 2013 and a sign outside the construction zone states Kohl's will open March 3 and a grand opening is planned for March 6. Sydney Hofer, Kohl's Department Stores Sr. Public Relations Coordinator, said she still couldn't share any information at this point. The mall's developer GK Development has been working on improving the mall site and demolished the former Sears auto center, former Wells Fargo, former Walgreens and former Furman buildings and are in the process of renovating the former Sears store. Late last year officials with TJ Maxx …

Visions for Vacancies is an occasional series that asks Ames residents what they want to see in their towns.
The former Taco Bell on Lincoln Way and Sheldon Avenue shuttered near the end of 2010. Booths and seating areas within are still intact as is the Iowa State University's CY mascot painted on the wall. The lot around the stucco like building has provided a good parking space for some, but what would you like to see in this 2,600 square foot building that opened in 1973?
