Did You Deck the House? Enter Your Photos Today

Enter your photos and videos of your decorated home by Dec. 26 for a chance to win $100,000 for your school.

They say most pictures are worth 1,000 words, but a photo of your decorated home could be worth so much more to the Ames school district. It could buy 200 iPads, more than 74,000 high school lunches, or 300,000 No. 2 pencils for your school. Patch.com is in the midst of a nationwide contest to find the best-dressed home in its Patch communities, and the winner’s school district will receive $100,000. Through Monday, you can nominate your home by uploading a photo to the contest entry form on the site. During that same time period you and your neighbors will also be able to vote for your favorite festive home. Santa's Sitting in Ames for a Few More Days

Santa will be at North Grand Mall in Ames through Saturday.

Santa will be working hard right up until Christmas. He will be making appearances in North Grand Mall in Ames until Christmas Eve. The jolly red-suited man will be available for photos from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. On Christmas Eve he will also be around for photo ops and wishes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. His sleigh is set up right outside Younkers in North Grand Mall.

Ames Patch Five Things: Photos with Santa and Christmas Stories

Things happening in Ames today and other things people might want to know.

1) Santa Photos Images by Ngaire, 219 Main St. is hosting Santa Claus from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16 and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
There is no cost for the photo session, but there is a charge for photo packages. Make an appointment by calling 515-460-5555. The website is www.ngaire.net.   2) Christmas Storytime Today and Saturday's Ames Public Library's Family story hours will focus on Christmas. They are at 10 a.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Farwell T. Brown Auditorium.   3) Schools Out Ames Community Schools will release students early today for winter break. There will be no afternoon classes at Northwood Preschool Center. All Ames elementary schools dismiss at 1:30 p.m.

Snow Ball Drop, Theatrical Productions and Song Today

Holiday events are piling up, so here are few you might want to check out.

Today's holiday events include holiday sales, workshops, music, theater productions and more. If none of the events below put you in the holiday spirit well you're truly a Scrooge. The Ames Main Street Cultural District will hold its annual Snow Ball Drop at 1 p.m. today in Tom Evans Plaza. Tom Drenthe, Main Street Cultural District event director, will throw 1,000 “snow balls” from the back of a truck onto the park area. The snow balls are actually ping-pong balls marked with giveaways and prizes from downtown businesses. Bank of the West is this year's sponsor.
