The fair ended Sunday, but the local winners keep coming.
Ames cooks and more won a slew of Iowa State Fair contests, announced by the 2011 Iowa State Fair in its final days. Cathy Stahlman won first place in the Pies with Keebler Crusts competition. Cheryl Rogers won first place in the Best Recipe Using Juan's Salsa class in the Juan O'Sullivans Make It Local contest. Charlotte Struble won first place in the Cooking with Pumpkin competition judged Saturday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Contestants from across the state entered their best creations in 58 individual cookie classes within the Midwest Living Cookies competition. Winners included two Ames women. Kathy Carter won second place in peanut butter bars. Linda Galvin won third place in rocky road squares, first place in oatmeal cookies …

From the Iowa State Fair Violinist Jonathan Wolf, 13, was one of five to advance in the senior division of Bill Riley's 52nd annual Iowa State Fair Talent Search. Wolf made it to the semi-final round and will perform again on Saturday, Aug. 20.

More Ames cooks, bakers and treat makers took prizes in the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Cheryl Rogers, of Ames, took second place in the Growing Up on Goulash competition. Rogers won first place and a $30 cash award, award-winning entrée, salad or appetizer in the Ostrich – The Smart Choice competition. Rogers won first place in the adult category of the Great American Spam Championship and Kid Chef contest. Rogers won first place in refrigerated rolls category of the King Arthur Yeast Rolls. In the International Cooking contest, Kate Barbaglia won third in dessert or other sweet dish. Linda Galvin received second place in the Mix It Up with Mrs. Clark's Juices contest, and won third place in the Let's Have Tea contest. Galvin also won won first…

From the Iowa State Fair: Ames resident Ron Heinen took home Best of Class Honors in the Bonsai division of the Floriculture competition, according to a news release from the Iowa State Fair. Heinen earned ribbons in four of the seven categories of the competition, including first place honors in the deciduous trees and shohin categories. Heinen also won second place in deciduous trees, second and third place in needled evergreen trees and second in forest - landscapes and rock plantings Ivan Hanthorn, also of Ames, won third place in deciduous trees, first and third in tropical trees and fifth in forest - landscapes and rock plantings and second in shohin.
