District Seeks Name with Purpose for Miller School

Suggested names for the district's newest elementary school will be taken through Sept. 30.

Ames school district officials are asking for the community's help in naming the new Miller Avenue school.

The hope is to pick a name that evokes the school's purpose, Superintendent Tim Taylor said in a release about naming the new school.

β€œWe’re seeking a name that evokes a sense of our purpose, whether people hear it next year or 20 years from now,” Taylor said.

To suggest a name for the new school building:

  • Place a note in the suggestion box in the office at Edwards Elementary School, 3622 Woodland Street, Ames, by 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30; or mail it to the Ames Community School District Educational Services Center, 415 Stanton Ave., 50014, postmarked by Monday, Sept. 30.

  • The district's naming policy allows schools to be named after people or groups if they have made significant contributions to the community or have demonstrated moral character. They can be named for neighborhoods as well but no school facilities can be named after a business, organization or other institution.
