Ames' Occupy Wall Street Movement Declines Interviews, Posts Protest March Route

Occupy ISU asked people upset with the state of the current economy to meet on Iowa State University campus Thursday.

People behind the movement being organized in Ames via Facebook might reveal themselves Thursday.

The creators of the Occupy ISU Facebook site declined interviews with Ames Patch unless they could remain anonymous, citing that it is a leaderless movement. They have asked for people upset with the current state of the economy to gather around the Campanile at noon Thursday and will begin a short march to Lincoln Way at 1 p.m.

And they have posted a link to the planned marching route in the Ames Patch .

As Occupy Wall Street speads across the country, communities have reacted in different ways. In Iowa City, the take over of a local park, but in Des Moines more than 30 people were arrested when they would leave the statehouse lawn.

Craig Long, a writer for the Iowa State Daily, said in a post Wednesday that he was surprised by the makeup of the . Some of the people had gray hair, he wrote.

“This movement is stronger and more real than most give it credit for. Mass media doesn't understand how something can exist without a stated goal or spokesman, they don't know who to interview, and so they try and discredit their potential impact,” Long wrote.

He went on to encourage others to participate in the Occupy meeting on Iowa State campus.

“If enough people turn out and support it, perhaps an extended occupation of campus will be viable. Regardless, even showing support on Central Campus on Thursday will be another example of how important these problems are to us, and hopefully will begin to effect changes needed to benefit us all.”
