On the Agenda: City Council to Consider Million Dollar Bond for Library and Proposed Logo Design.

Ames City officials will consider several issues at its regular Council meeting 7 p.m. today in City Hall.

The y Board of Trustees will ask the council to request that an $18 million dollar referendum be posed for an expansion project. The project is expected to cost about $20 million. The library's last addition was 26 years ago and anticipated to accommodate growth through a 20-year period. According to plans, the 48,000 square foot library would grow to 77,000 square feet.

Library trustees originally planned to ask for $5 million in gifts and $15 million in general obligation bonds backed by property taxes, but a consultant now suggests asking for $18 million in general obligation bonds in case gifts are lower than expected.

If voters approved an $18 million bond, property taxes on owner-occupied homes would increase $29.70 per $100,000 assessed valuation each year.

Council members will also discuss adopting a new logo. The Ames Chamber of Commerce, the Ames Economic Development Commission and the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau have paid for the current design: a white and Iowa State red abstract letter A with an arrow.

The city collected on the logo through its site and City website. Those comments will be presented to the council tonight and the council will decide what to do next.
