Iowa Poll: Bachmann and Romney Slip Below Perry

Public Policy Polling says Bachman would be hurt most if Sarah Palin enters the race.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry now leads in Iowa among GOP candidates in the race for the party's presidential nomination, surging ahead of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, according to a poll released today.

The poll, released by Public Policy Polling, also shows that Bachmann and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas would be hurt most should former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin enter the race. Her candidacy would have little affect in Iowa on support for Perry and Romney, the poll found.

Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames earlier this month, with Paul finishing second.

PPP is a Democratic organization that uses automated polling, but has proved reliable in the past.

"All the momentum in the Republican race is on Rick Perry's side now," Dean Debnam, the polling organization's president, said in a news release. "Michele Bachmann's support over the last two months has now stopped and Mitt Romney is actually losing voters in Iowa."Β

Iowa, which holds the lead-off spot in the Republican vote for the nomination, continues to draw candidates and potential candidates. Several are scheduled to speak in Des Moines on Saturday, including former New York Governor George Pataki, whose camp says he will make a "major announcement."

Perry did not compete in the Iowa Straw Poll, formally announcing his candidacy for the nomination the day of the event. Both he and Palin, though, have visited Iowa and have drawn enthusiastic crowds.

Details of the poll can be found in a PPP news release.
