Ames Residents Have Until Jan. 4 to Pledge Support for Blue Zone

The City of Ames will apply to become a Blue Zone community but needs to show that residents are behind them. Read on to learn how to sign up.

The City of Ames wants to become a model of community health, but it needs some help from residents.

The city has applied to be a Blue Zone demonstration community. If selected, Ames would receive support in implementing healthy initiatives from the Blue Zones Project, a collaboration between Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Healthways.

Part of the city's application must include community support. Residents can sign up at www.bluezonesproject.com or text pledge support by typing BZP in the message line to the number 772937.

Ames' application is due Jan. 4. About 10 of 60 Iowa cities that have applied would be selected.

Residents who want to be more actively involved in Blue Zones Project should contact Stephanie Downs at (515) 239-5354 or email at sdowns@city.ames.ia.us or Susan Gwiasda at (515) 239-5204 or email at sgwiasda@city.ames.ia.us

Clarification: January 4 is the deadline for communities to submit their application. It is NOT the deadline for citizen pledges. Ames residents may continue to pledge to participate in the Blue Zones Project right through the end of April and every one of their pledges will be considered as part of Ames' application.
