Seven Injured in Head-On Collision on Highway 69

A driver said she fell asleep causing an accident early Saturday.

Seven people were injured over the weekend in a head-on collision caused by an apparent sleeping driver, according to an accident report from the Story County Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened in the southbound shoulder of Iowa Highway 69 just before 3 a.m. south of Ken Maril Road.

Marina Scott, 19, of Boone, was driving a Chevrolet Sonic north on the highway when she fell asleep and crossed the center line and continued onto the southbound shoulder striking another car, Scott said, according to a report from the Story County Sheriff's office. Scott's vehicle collided with a southbound Hyundai, driven by Amanda Beehler, 23, of Cambridge. Beehler said she had driven onto the shoulder to avoid a collision.

Scott and three other people in the Chevy and Beehler and two others in the Hyundai were taken to hospitals in Ames and Des Moines.

Dana Beehler, 21, of Des Moines; Christina Hilton, 39, of Des Moines; Austin Hammer, 18, of Boone; Alicia Runyan, 18, of Boone; and Jacob Williams, 25, of Oakville; were all injured in the accident according to the report.

Williams, Hammer and Scott were treated and released over the weekend, according to an article in theΒ Ames Tribune.

Scott said she was returning from a club in Des Moines. Charges are pending, according to the report.
