A single shot was fired and the bullet went through the interior walls of the apartment, passed through the interior hallway and struck a cabinet in the apartment across the hall, the release said. Residents of the home that had been fired into, were on the deck at the time of the shooting, said Ames Police CMDR. Geoff Huff.

They heard the shot, but didn't know what it was or that a bullet had gone through their wall and into a cabinet, Huff said.

People told police that they saw a man running from the building after the shooting.

Officers recovered the bullet, but don't know the identity of the shooter and hope that someone might have seen more.

“We'd sure like to hear from them,” Huff said.
