Ames Man Receives 4 Charges For Allegedly Breaking a Car Window

Zachary Berg received a felony charge early Monday. Police said he broke out a window while drunk, refused to cooperate and struck an emergency room employee.

A 19-year-old Ames man faces a string of charges including a felony after allegedly breaking out a car window while under the influence of alcohol.

found Zachary Berg, 19, of S. 5th Street, hiding in a bush when they first arrived to the 500 block of South 4th Street about 1 a.m. Monday to investigate a report of a man breaking out car windows, complaints said.

The man fit the description that the caller provided and had a laceration on his right elbow, above his left eye and dirt on both knees and shoes, complaints stated. The officer wrote that it appeared Berg had fallen. When he first spoke to police he said β€œI'm drunk” but he refused to cooperate and tried to run, complaints stated. Complaints stated the man had blood shot watery eyes and had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his facial area. He was taken to to be treated for a cut on his face and while there kicked an emergency room tech in the arm, complaints said.

The vehicle Berg allegedly busted had a broken driver's side window with a dent and a scrape above it and scratches on the door, complaints said.

Berg was charged with interference with official acts, public intoxication, first offense; assault on a health care provider and second-degree criminal mischief.

Berg was taken to the Story County Jail in Nevada where he later posted a bond and was released according to court records.

Second-degree criminal mischief is a Class D felony, punishable by five years in prison and up to a $7,500 fine.

Berg could not be reached for comment.

Reginald Fields, 52, West Burlington, was charged with harassment by communication.

Christopher Johnson, 27, Boone, was charged with operating while intoxicated, second offense.

Toby Thompson, 33, Westbrook Drive, was charged with domestic abuse.
