BLOG: Election Comes Down to Who Can Fix the Economy

James Carville is still right. The election comes down to who can fix the economy. Period.

As a political activist, I am always engaged on a number of levels on a number of issues.

As a blogger, I am engrossed in a plethora of coverage about a plethora of issues...everything from contraception to the role of Satan in our lives.

But the average, working-class voter is not engaged on this level.

Back in 1992, James Carville kept the Clinton campaign focused with this simple message: "It's The Economy, Stupid."

Voters are spending alot of time these days stressing over the economy. We're not alone: Tara and I have just returned from a trip to Ireland, where the unemployment rate is 14 percent. People are weary of the stress.

Voters elected Barack Obama to fix the economy. With unemployment and gas prices set to rise again, they're poised to fire him over his failure.

The key for Republican candidates is to stay focused. The 24/7 media likes titillation, not discussions of tax codes. The nominee will need to overcome that obsession.
