An Avalanche Of Polls
In this poll-rich environment, campaigns must work to keep enthusiasm high.
Former Des Moines Register columnist David Yepsen called it, "horserace journalism." He'd do an occasional column handicapping various political races. But it was occasional.
Now, horserace journalism is just about all we've got.
In this blog's home state of Iowa, we were told on Friday that Romney is up one, on Sunday that the race is tied, and on Wednesday that Obama is up four.
Here's the only conclusion that can be reached: both campaigns have done a great job of not allowing the polls to dampen the enthusiasm of the supporters of either candidate. I remember the sinking feeling that I experienced as John McCain's campaign made the final turn toward home. Now, both Republicans and Democrats feel that their guy is gonna win. The polls won't deter base turn-out...it still remains in the hands of independents.
