Weird Iowa Rewind: Colbert Mocks Rep. King, Baby Born in Bathroom, and Kid Reportedly Left in Park

Iowa has no shortage of weird news. Here is some of it from around our Iowa Patches.

Iowa Patch Editor Deb Belt collects an assortment of weird news from Iowa Patches each week. Here's what you missed on June 28.

Satirist Stephen Colbert just can't resist having fun with Rep. Steve King, the Republican Congressman who represents Ames.

The latest Colbert shout-out came last week after King spoke out against a law that increased the size of chicken cages in California. Colbert seemed to agree with the Congressman and said the 200 square inch cages are bigger than the cages he keeps his interns in.

An Ankeny couple didn't plan a weird place for their daughter to be born, but she had other ideas. Rose Ayers of Ankeny gave birth to her fourth child, Stormy, in the master bathroom of her home. The healthy child was delivered with the help of her husband and a Polk County dispatcher.

This case, if proven true in court, is more sad than weird.

West Des Moines mother who allegedly didn’t call police for nearly six hours after she discovered her 5-year-old missing from the Des Moines park where she dropped him off was arrested. Danille Marie Clinton, 34, faces a charge of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person after her son, reportedly shirtless and shoeless, wandered up to a birthday party at Union Park and a family played with and fed the child for several hours. He was taken to a shelter.

There are reams of lovelorn musings posted on Craigslist. So Patch finds it weird that these creepers from Urbandale and elsewhere in the metro have lingering doubts over whether there are creepers lurking on the site. Says one woman after being named on the site, "This world is full of crazies and I would never respond to a post about me!”

And we wrap up with some strange tidbits from police reports.

First, Marc Daniel McVey, 44, of Johnston, was arrested for criminal mischief for allegedly burning a woman's clothes. Officers were called to help the Johnston Fire Department with an illegal burn. Police found women's clothes in the fire pit; they were later contacted by a woman who said her clothes had been burned in the fire.

Waukee man reported his credit card was used to make online purchases at Nordstrom's. The weird part? He wasn't shopping there.

Lastly, two Iowa City businesses and a store in Cedar Rapids were raided in what the Drug Enforcement Agency is calling the "largest-ever synthetic drug takedown." The Den and In-Zone in Iowa City have been closed since being raided; YR Dollar Stop Liquor & Tobacco in Cedar Rapids was also raided.

The Drug Enforcement Agency reports 150 arrest warrant and nearly 375 search warrants were served in 35 states, 49 cities and five countries .
