Protest Brings Cheap Gas to Ames Tuesday

Residents will be able to buy gas for $1.84 a gallon at an Ames Kum & Go Tuesday.

Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political action group is hoping to bring sweet memories of lower gas prices back to the forefront of the presidential race.

Regardless of your political affiliation, it might be a good time to fill up on some cheap, subsidized gasoline.

According to the Des Moines Register, the Americans for Prosperity will be offering $1.84 a gallon gas (the price they say a gallon of gas was four years ago) as a criticism of President Barack Obama's policies as part of their "Obama's Failing Agenda" tour.

Gasoline will be limited to the first 150 vehicles and each car will be limited to 15 gallons, said Mark Lucas, Iowa director for Americans for Prosperity, which was co-founded by wealthy political activists Charles and David Koch.

The idea is to highlight Obama’s “failing green energy policies,” and point out that the price of a gallon of gas was $1.84 a gallon four years ago, Lucas said.

Kum & Go Gas Station at 4510 Mortensen Road will offer reduced gas from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

There will also be similar events in Waterloo and Corallville.

As for gas prices, you can see how they've progressed here on this chart from the Consumer Energy Report. After staying relatively stable between 1980-2000, gas prices have gone up under President Obama as part of a surge in gas prices that started under President George W. Bush.
