Dec. 21 Mayan Apocalypse: What to Do Before the End of the World -- And After

There's plenty to do in Ames before the world ends -- and afterward, should we all still exist.

Dec. 21, 2012 marks the end of the 5,125-year Mayan calendar, which at least some people out there -- and some people way out there -- believe will mark the end of the world.

Not so, says NASA, explaining why the Mayan Apocalypse isn't going to happen as kind of scheduled.

"Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar," the NASA website states.
