Rasmussen said the board is on a good path but wants to provide the district insight and leadership.
Candidate filing for the Ames Community School board doesn't open until July, but resident Tim Rasmussen has already announced his candidacy with a letter to the community. The seats of Board Members David Putz, Mike Espeset and Bill Talbot are up for election in September. Read Rasmussen's letter below: Today, I am beginning my campaign for a seat on the Ames School Board. I had seven excellent years as a teacher. Between my four years of elementary teaching, one year of substitute teaching, and two years as a K-8 Extended Learning Program teacher, my experiences in the classroom will assist me in serving on the board. Additionally, my 22 years of successful business management have provided me with a strong background in maintaining …

Can the Grand Old Party become the "Growth and Opportunity Party?” Yes, a national report says, if it wants to survive.
Remember that nudge Iowa Republicans got earlier this year to relax on social issues or risk more crushing defeats at the polls? It’s a full-fledged shove now. A Growth & Opportunity Project “autopsy” report released this week by the Republican National Committee said defeats at the polls result from a perception on the part of some voters that the party is “scary,” “narrow-minded” and “out of touch,” and that it’s a party of “stuffy old men,” the Huffington Post reported. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus was in Iowa this week talking about the report after appearing Sunday on “Face the Nation,” where he said the 2012 election post-mortem exposes the party’s “lousy job of branding and marketing” its principles. In a special reporting project …

Paul who launched onto the national political scene partially due to a filibuster against drones will be the headline speaker at the Republican Party's Lincoln Dinner in Cedar Rapids. Ticket and event info inside.
Ready for Iowa Caucus season to start up again? Marco Rubio has already graced the state with a visit, and today Iowa Republican Chair A.J. Spiker announced that Sen. Rand Paul will be the head speaker at the Iowa GOP's Lincoln Day Dinner on May 10. Ticket and event info at the link. Paul vaulted himself to the national stage as an heir apparent to retiring father Ron as he filibustered against the Obama administration's foreign policy, particularly its policy on the use of military drones on foreign soil. His broadside against the Obama administration, and possibly the least favorite member for conservatives, Attorney General Eric Holder, was a rallying cry for Republicans. Will this mean that Rand Paul will run for president? No, not …

Braley who announced he will run for the US Senate Seat being vacated by Sen. Tom Harkin, tweeted about King's vote against a Senate version of VAWA.
While 4th District Congressman Steve King weighs his decision to run for Tom Harkin's U.S. Senate seat, his potential competitor Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley has already begun his attack. Braley called him out for voting against the senate version of the Violence Against Women Act, according to a report in the Des Moines Register. Braley tweeted “#VAWA passes House overwhelmingly>280 votes. A good day on the House floor. 3 Iowans voted “yes.” 1 voted “no.” Any Guesses?” King said he supported the House version of the bill and released the following statement after his vote: "Although I am concerned that this bill was brought to the floor in a manner that undermined work done by the Judiciary Committee, I understand the importance of …

King issued a statement on his Facebook page Wednesday afternoon that he wouldn't rush into a decision on running for U.S. Senate.
Congressman Steve King, R-Kiron, led early GOP polls for Tom Harkin's US Senate seat but said Wednesday that he has not yet decided if he will run. "A potential Senate race remains an analytical decision first and then one that requires deep conviction. Such a decision includes, of course, my family and the best interests of Iowans and Americans. It is too big a decision to be rushed." King said in a statement released on his King for Congress Facebook page. The announcement came after Congressman Tom Latham said that he would not run for the seat, according to a report on KWWL. Latham wrote in a letter to the people he represents that it would be wrong for him to launch a two-year campaign for office after he was just elected to his new …

Rep. Bruce Braley has announced he will run for Sen. Tom Harkin's senate seat when Harkin retires in 2014.
Rep. Bruce Braley, of Iowa's first district, has netted endorsements from two of his Congressional colleagues as he prepares to run for the Senate. Rep. Dave Loebsack and former Rep. Leonard Boswell, both Democrats representing Iowa's second and third districts, respectively, lent Braley their support this weekend. Braley will run for the Senate seat to be vacated by longtime Senator Tom Harkin, who has announced he will not seek re-election in 2014. "I’ve watched him fight passionately for Iowa’s small towns, big cities, and working families. Bruce has been a tireless advocate for Iowa's veterans," Boswell said. "He’s never forgotten where he’s come from, and he’ll be an even more effective voice for us in the U.S. Senate.” No Republican …

King who has been named the GOP frontrunner for Harkin's senate seat in early polls, said Karl Rove and American Crossroads are leading a crusade against him and other unelectable conservatives.
Iowa Congressman Steve King has been the front runner of many GOP polls for Tom Harkin's senate seat, but is preparing for a fight saying that Karl Rove and American Crossroads will prevent his nomination. King made statements in an email published in the Des Moines Register and in an article in the New York Times that he wouldn't be bullied out of running. “I have not made a decision on this matter, but already Karl Rove and his army have launched a crusade against me,” King said according to Politico. While King leads among potential Republican nominees he might be too conservative to win the seat. Democrat contender Bruce Braley has come out ahead of King in early surveys of Democrat, Republican and Independent voters. And that's what …
Who will run for the seat to be vacated by long-time Iowa Senator Tom Harkin?
A day after Rep. Bruce Braley announced his intentions to run for the United States Senate, a Des Moines Register poll has found Iowans' top choice for the seat is former governor Tom Vilsack. Fifty-six percent of Iowans say he’d be an appealing Senate candidate, while 35 percent say he would not be an appealing candidate. Vilsack, who is the current U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, hasn't expressed interest in the seat, though he hasn't dismissed the possibility either. The only sure contender so far is Braley, who said in an email to supporters Thursday that he would form a committee to explore a Senate run. The seat has long been held by Democrat Tom Harkin, who has announced he will not seek re-election in 2014. An Iowa Senate seat hasn'…
