See what happens when idealism clashes with reality.
From Ames Community Schools Ames High School’s Drama Department performs Christopher Sergel’s adaptation of “Up the Down Staircase” 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ames High Auditorium. Admission is $4 for students and $5 for adults. The play is based on a book written by novelist Bel Kaufman in 1965. It tells the story of how Sylvia Barrett’s idealism as a first year English teacher clashes with the absurd bureaucracy of a big city high school. VEISHEA, Iowa State University's annual celebration of colleges have given students and the community plenty of events to enjoy. Find a few of the celebration's highlights below: VEISHEA PARADE The parade around campus begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and features more than 90 entries. Eight traditional floats, balloons and seven bands are included in the mix. The parade begins at the Armory and stops at the east parking deck on Wallace Road. INTERNATIONAL FOOD The International Food Fair is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday inside the Memorial Union Great Hall. Admission is $3. Music, theater and community service will be a big part of this first weekend in April. Live bands will perform at local venues including DG's Tap House and the M-Shop and The Mousetrap will open Friday at ACTORS. The annual Stash the Trash VEISHEA cleanup event is slated for Saturday. People can still buy a ticket to Bon Jovi's April 14 performance at Wells Fargo Arena, but Richie Sambora won't be there according to the latest news. Dallas Moore wants to share his passion and hopes you can help him out by raising the $2,000 he needs to print his first book.
An Ames native intends to publish his own book of poetry, that is, if you want to read it. Dallas J. Moore, of Social Republick, has gone the way of Veronica Mars and is asking for potential fans to help him out with the book's production. He's asking for a total of $2,000 by April 11. KHOI Community radio recently used this fund-raising method by launching a campaign on Kickstarter as did the producers of the Veronica Mars movie project. The site allows people to pledge a specified amount of money that is only collected if the campaign meets its fund-raising goal. Moore, who currently lives in Des Moines, is asking for support from his fans too, but is using indiegogo.com instead of Kickstarter. Moore started writing poetry when he was 15…

These three strange people were seen hanging on Ames Main Street buildings.
Three duct tape statues were spotted hanging out on Main Street this week. They appear to be on their way to the second floor of a newly remodeled building home to Iowa State University's Integrated Visual Arts and Design on Main office. The Iowa State University Design on Main and Visual Arts offices use about 7,000 square feet of space in the former Antique Ames antique mall in the 200 block of Main Street.
