I said it before and I'll say it again: Royce White is not your average young athlete. The Iowa State basketball star who is NBA-bound this summer just turned 21 and is having a party Friday to celebrate. Needless to say, it's not the typical 21st birthday party. This one is for a good cause.
Royce is hosting an 18-and-older party in Ames at Hickory Hall on Friday -- that's April 13 -- from 10 p.m to 2 a.m. Any and all fans of age are welcome, and alcohol is not allowed. There is a $5 cover charge and all of the proceeds go to Orchard Place in Des Moines.
Orchard Place is a charity organization developing strong futures for children with mental health and behavioral disorders. Royce, who has spoken of his anxiety condition, wants to spread awareness about it and other mental health topics.
"Everything is bigger than me!" Royce, our friend here at the YMCA said this afternoon. "Helping people is my life's ambition."
I don't know about you - but I don't know many 21 year olds who forego drinking to celebrate with fans of almost all ages and do it all for a charity. Royce never ceases to amaze, does he?
The party is called #ProjectXXX - the x's are for the Roman numeral representation of Royce's number - 30.
It's a "Dress to Impress" dress code, so take that how you will.
The first 100 people will receive anxiety awareness T-shirts and the first 200 a signed picture of Royce.
There will also be 75 VIP tickets on sale for $15 and $1 raffle tickets for a pair of signed Kobe VII "Black Rose" Edition game-worn shoes. Text 646-499-3036 for inquiries about VIP tickets (not Royce's number).
If you'd like to check out this admirable effort of Royce's, stop by Hickory Hall this Friday night starting at 10 p.m. at 300 South 17th Street in Ames. You just might be able to say you met the ISU star and the NBA's next best player to give back.

I would like to praise the March 22, 2012 Royce White article written by Derek
Hannah. Mr. Hannah's concise and accurate account of Mr. White gave me an
inside view of this exceptionally phenomenal man,, Mr. White.
It is not very often that the public is treated to a ''feel good'' story and -this- was indeed a treat and a pleasure.
I look forward to continue reading Mr. Hannah's articles.
Thank you.
