Team PrISUm Heads to Wisconsin in What Place?

Hyperion Team PrISUm's solar car made it through the heat on Wednesday while other American Solar Challenge competitors fell behind.

Team PrISUm's Hyperion ended Wednesday, the fifth day of the American Solar Challenge --- an eight day race across the county --- in second place.

While many other solar car teams were disabled by the heat, according to a report from ISU News service, 's team took it in stride. Some teams had to pack up their cars and haul them to the next checkpoint, Normal, Ill., in the 1,650 mile race.

On the road Wednesday, Hyperion's dashboard senors recorded a temperature of 125 degrees, but the car's battery pack remained operational and Hyperion kept rolling.

“I think a lot of teams have been struggling with the heat,” Evan Stumpges, Team PrISUm’s project director and a May graduate in mechanical engineering told ISU News.

“It was quite warm, but our batteries are not having any problems.”

Today Team PrISUm is headed to Verona, Wis. The race began Saturday in Rochester, NY and ends Saturday in Saint Paul, Minn.

Currently ISU remains behind the University of Michigan, which has held first place throughout the race according to results provided by American Solar Challenge.
