City of Ames Names New Attorney

Ames City Council names new attorney Tuesday.

The Ames City Council announced Tuesday that Judy K. Parks would serve as the new Ames City Attorney starting today.

Parks had been appointed Acting Ames City Attorney in December 2012, and has worked in the City’s Legal Department for nearly 25 years.

“After a long, thorough application process, we are delighted Judy Parks has agreed to become the next Ames City Attorney,” Mayor Ann Campbell said in a prepared statement. “For many years, Judy has honed her legal skills at the City of Ames, and the Council has appreciated her expertise and insight into a variety of municipal issues. We are very excited to be promoting such a capable, dedicated attorney.”

Parks received her associate's degree in criminal justice/law enforcement from Des Moines Area Community College. She received her bachelor's degree in sociology/criminal justice from Drake University in Des Moines. She later earned a master’s degree in public administration and her law degree from Drake University. From February 1987 to December 1988, Parks served as the Assistant Story County Attorney. She was hired as the Ames Assistant City Attorney in December 1988.

The City Attorney for the City of Ames reports to the City Council and provides legal advice and services to all City departments and agencies. The City Attorney also provides legal counsel to Mary Greeley Medical Center. The City Attorney supervises the Legal Department, which handles the drafting of ordinances and resolutions, preparation and review of contract documents, and preparation of decisions for the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
