Ames Police Blotter: Man Allegedly Rear-Ends Vehicle, Threatens Driver

Charges over the weekend include information from the Ames Police Department, Iowa State University police and the Story County Sheriff's Office.

An Ames man was charged with felony operating while intoxicated after allegedly striking another vehicle in broad daylight on Sunday and then driving away.

James Ryan, 33, Aplin Road, was charged with operating while intoxicated, third offense, a class D felony, simple assault, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, driving while barred, driving under suspension, and driving revoked. Ryan denied the fact that he was driving at all but a man called police Sunday evening saying that Ryan rear-ended his vehicle on Chamberlain Street and then got out and assaulted him and drove away.

The man said that the defendant said not to call police because it would be his fifth OWI. Police used a license plate number and went to Ryan's home. He came stumbling out and had poor balance when both walking and standing still, criminal complaints said. His breath smelled like an alcoholic beverage, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, complaints said. Multiple witnesses including three others who were in the vehicle that was struck and an employee of a nearby liquor store said that Ryan had rear-ended the man.

The man said that after the accident that Ryan got out of his vehicle, started yelling and grabbed the other driver by his neck and pushed him.

Ryan's arrest was one of many over the weekend. Ames Police tabulated their calls over VEISHEA weekend from 3 p.m. April 20 to 7 p.m. April 22 to see how it compares to other big weekends in town.
